The three pictures above are of a heavily
carved dray, this dray is one of the best
drays that has ever been built. It took the
builder (a man in Lancaster) approx.
5 years to build and carve it. It is owned
by one of the best known Gypsy Cob
breeders in the world, who brought it to
James to gild and decorate using 23.5
carat English gold leaf
The next two pictures down are of a dray built entirely from scratch and
decorated by James, using 23.5 carat English gold and platinum leaf.
This dray was built for the Dolan family, Gypsy cob breeders.
The next two pictures are of a waggon totally rebuilt from scratch by James, using the original iron work from a waggon built 100 years ago.
This waggon was built for one of the UK's top Gypsy cob breeders.
The next two pictures are of a waggon which James built the top, on an
existing dray.
The last picture is of a waggon which James built the top, on an existing
dray, for the Dooley family, renowned Gypsy cob breeders.
Building and painting waggons and drays is a labour of love for James, he does it to keep the age old traditions alive for the Gypsy families in the UK. The man hours spent building and decorating these waggons are
endless, there are millions of people in the UK, and yet you could count
on one hand, the people who can paint and understand the traditional decoration of these waggons and drays to the standards set down in the 1930's and 1940's by Jimmy Berry and Tom Gaskin. In the UK today you will see a lot of waggons and drays in primer, waiting to be painted by reputed painters, as Gypsy families would rather their treasured waggon or dray remained unpainted, than ruined by a painter who did not understand the traditional heritage of this skilled work.
