The first print in the series, The Horseshoe Mare was one of the most legendary and well known mares among the Gypsy community, this was due to her outstanding confirmation, as depicted in this picture. Gypsies put years of breeding into producing this outstanding mare. Her breed history and details of the finer points of this mare are included in the certificate which accompanies this artwork. This illustration shows why this mare set the breed standard. Apart from James' own knowledge of The Horseshoe Mare, he has worked in conjunction with Gypsy breeders who actually owned this mare, as well as from original photographs, to gain an accurate insight which he has interpreted in this outstanding piece of art.
